An Historic adventure begins.....
Tuesday, October 8th, we arrived in Birmingham, Alabama to begin a week long tour of the historic sites I've only read about in history books. Also, it is our hope to view some of the passionate creative art of some Southern self-taught artists. In preparing displays for the Hands on Black History Museum, I've studied about Civil Rights and have some faint memories as a child growing up during this turbulent time. I felt a strong pull to stand at the sites and witness the sacred ground on which the many unsung heroes and heroines, both young and old who took a stand to create a better life for those of us that would come after them. To read their names and see their faces brings to life this important chapter in our nation's history.
Our self guided tour began at the Freedom Walk tour of the historical Kelly Ingram Park . I loved the inscription on the stone as you enter the park:
The park was the site of demonstrations and protests during the 1960's and now is home to commemorative sculptures banners and plaques that tell the story of the area's history.
The park was filled with school children and folks from all walks of life. Learning and living and taking in the sights together along with the beautiful fall weather was a great beginning to our adventure.
